Dettifoss is Europe's most powerful waterfall, a thundering giant in northeast Iceland where 500 cubic meters of glacial water plunge 45 meters every second. The sheer force creates a permanent cloud of spray visible from kilometers away, while the ground trembles beneath your feet at the viewing platforms. Fed by the Vatnajökull glacier via the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, the gray-brown waters carry volcanic sediment that adds to its raw, primordial atmosphere—so impressive it was featured in the opening scene of Prometheus. The east bank (Route 864, paved) offers easier access and better views of the falls, while the west bank (Route 862, gravel) provides a more rugged experience. Don't miss nearby Selfoss upstream and the horseshoe-shaped Hafragilsfoss downstream. Waterproof clothing recommended due to heavy spray.
