Jökulsárlón is Iceland's crown jewel—a breathtaking glacier lagoon where massive icebergs calve from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier and drift toward the sea in an ever-changing display of frozen sculptures. This deep lagoon (up to 248 meters, Iceland's deepest lake) has grown dramatically since forming in the 1930s as climate change accelerates glacial retreat. Icebergs display astonishing shades of blue, white, and black (from volcanic ash layers), some centuries old, slowly melting as they journey toward the Atlantic. Seals play among the ice, and the surrounding peaks create a panorama of indescribable beauty. Boat tours on amphibious vehicles or zodiacs weave among the bergs for unforgettable experiences. Across the road, Diamond Beach displays ice chunks washed ashore on black volcanic sand, glittering like enormous jewels. Jökulsárlón has starred in films including James Bond, Tomb Raider, and Batman Begins. The lagoon is stunning in any weather and season—misty mornings, midnight sun, winter darkness, Northern Lights.
